Workforce Summit 2001 IntroductionDuring the past years, the distribution and number of health professions workers in Colorado has been a major concern. Last fall leaders from the University of Colorado campuses and the Community Colleges met to discuss issues of common interest. One issue that rose to the front of the discussion was the critical shortage of the spectrum of health care workers throughout the state. Specific issues included how to attract and retain students to the professions, how to recruit and retain faculty for the health professions, how to attract professionals to rural areas and underserved urban areas, and how to build and share resources among education, business and government organizations throughout the state. The original meeting concluded with a commitment that the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the Community Colleges work together to identify issues and develop collaborative areas of interest and mechanisms to address these complex and long-standing concerns. The overall goal of this Health Workforce Summit is to create a unified effort by all of the Colorado educational institutions in collaboration with business and government to improve the number and distribution of healthcare workers throughout the State of Colorado in both urban and rural communities. The goal will be achieved by developing initiatives with planned follow up actions aimed at increasing and sustaining the number of graduates from health professions programs to meet the health care needs of the citizens in our communities. The results of the Summit are expected to include:
