IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS CONCERNING
THE
2008 DENVER METROPOLITAN REGIONAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR
- The 2008 Denver Metropolitan Regional Science & Engineering Fair (DMRSEF) will be held at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science Wednesday and Thursday, February 27-28, 2008. The entry deadline is Tuesday, February 5, 2008. The 2008 DMRSEF registration fee for EACH participant will be $25. Each team member must send in payment and registration form. STUDENTS SHOULD ALWAYS RETAIN ORIGINAL SIGNED COPIES OF ALL FORMS AND SHOULD NPY SEND ORIGINALS TO ANY FAIR.
- The International Rules for Pre-college Science Research: Guidelines for Science Fairs located at Http://www.sciserv.org/ISEF/document/, and contains all required forms except the 2008 Denver Metro Science Fair Registration Form and the 2008 Denver Metro Science Fair Abstract Form which are included with this email and are available on line at Http://www2.uchsc.edu/sciencefair. You may liberally copy any and all forms and lists of rules. The DMRSEF follows the International Rules in their entirety for both Senior and Junior Divisions.
- The 2008 Colorado Science and Engineering Fair (CSEF), for winners at regional fairs, including the DMRSEF, will be held at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, on Thursday-Saturday, April 10-12, 2008. CSEF will continue to allow Team Projects, as will DMRSEF.
- The 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, May 11-16, 2008. Two Grand Award winners in the Senior Division (9-12th grade) from the DMRSEF, sponsored by Intel Corporation, will be awarded all expense paid trips to compete at the Intel ISEF in Atlanta. The DMRSEF is affiliated with ISEF.
- Again, the DMRSEF rules are in agreement with the rules of the CSEF and all International Rules. Grade levels that are eligible at the DMRSEF are: Junior Division: grades 6, 7, 8 and Senior Division: grades 9, 10, 11, 12. DMRSEF will use the same categories as the CSEF. DMRSEF categories are: Botany, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Health and Behavioral Sciences, Math and Computer Sciences, Microbiology, Physical Science, Zoology and Team (any scientific discipline).
- Every project must complete and submit 2008 versions of the following forms as part of the student papers:
a. Checklist for Adult Sponsor (1). This form must be completed prior to experimentation.
b. Student Checklist Form (1A). Note that this form calls for the actual starting and ending date of experimentation, not just the proposed starting date. There is also a TEAM version of this form if required.
c. Approval Form (1B)
|
The dates of all Student, Parent/Guardian, Adult Sponsor, and SRC (or IRB) (when required) signatures must be prior to the starting date entered on Form1A. The Scientific Review Committee (SRC) consists of a biomedical scientist, a science teacher, and at least one other member. The SRC reviews and approves the three forms listed above, as well as all other required forms (see Item 7, below). We strongly encourage the establishment of a SRC in your school. Members associated with your school SRC must be registered with the director of the DMRSEF. If your school cannot form an SRC, please contact the DMRSEF director. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) consists of a science teacher, a school administrator and one of the following: psychologist, psychiatrist, medical doctor, or registered nurse. The IRB is a committee that, according to federal law, must evaluate the potential physical or psychological risk of research involving human subjects. This includes the SRC, any surveys or questionnaires to be used in a project. This is a local, school-based board. An SRC can serve as an IRB if properly constituted.

- Certain projects require additional International Rules forms [e.g., Regulated Research Institutional/Industrial Setting Form (1C), Qualified Scientist Form (2), Risk Assessment Form (3), Human Subjects Form (4), Vertebrate Animal Form (5A) for research at a Non-Regulated Research Site, Vertebrate Animal Form (5B) for research at a Regulated Research Institution, Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents Form (6A), Human and Animal Tissue Form (6B), and Continuation Projects Form (7)]. Any project involving nonhuman vertebrate animals (Type A studies), pathogenic agents, controlled substance and recombinant DNA must be approved by a Scientific Review Committee prior to beginning the research. All Type B vertebrate animal studies must be reviewed by an Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) at a federally regulated institution. Any project involving human subjects must have the prior approval of an Institutional Review Board. IRBs and IACUCs already exist at federally-registered research institutions for work carried out at those sites. When projects involving human or nonhuman animal subjects are conducted at research institutions, they must be reviewed and approved by the respective committees. Please read the rules carefully regarding "potentially hazardous Biological agents". Only non pathogenic agents may be grown and manipulated in school.
- Each DMRSEF individual or team project must display a project data notebook and a research paper. Each DMRSEF individual or team project must submit an abstract (250 words maximum) on the DMRSEF abstract form.
- Continuation of projects: students will be judged only on research completed since the last DMRSEF. Therefore, display boards should reflect the current year's work only. However, supporting data books (not research papers) from previous related research may be included with the project. Any continuing research must document substantial expansion of experimentation. Documentation must include the prior years' approved, signed forms behind current-year materials and be clearly labeled in the upper right hand corner with the year involved. New forms must be submitted for the new work.
If you have questions, please contact Dr. Stevens.
